Why say it out loud, when you could say it with your shirt?

Design by Christopher Lee Sauve´

A fashion statement has never been more literal than the new wave of graphic message t-shirts hitting fashion runways and everyday street wear. Wearing a t-shirt with a generic logo or cartoon character is no longer enough to impress, but with the endless lists of phrases and images, what makes the perfect graphic message t-shirt?

Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy2010
Fashion designers everywhere, from Riccardo Tisci to Ashish Gupta, have once again taken affection to the famous t-shirt, turning it into high-end fashion must-haves. The perfect message for the perfect shirt, if you notice, is quick, clever, short and according to Christopher Lee Sauve´ always inspired by controversy and politics.

Ashish
Canadian born Sauve´ is no stranger to making bold statements out of clothes. The New York based artist designer takes a satirically artful approach to turning some of fashions most memorable scandals into t-shirts. Take his most current Naomi Campbell inspired design for example. The design, inspired by Campbell’s most current stint in court, takes a picture of the supermodel sporting an innocent bob cut and places a round cut diamond over each eye, with a looming message reading “DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER”. This brilliantly composed t-shirt is just one of Suave´’s most recognized works, others include his SAVE ANNA” plea in response to rumors of Anna Wintour’s departure from Vogue, and the famous “I DIE.BANNANAS” t-shirt inspired by celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe. Christopher Lee Sauve´ entertains a comical view of fashion, but simultaneously participates in it. His t-shirts and their opinionative stances transpire important advice for graphic message t-shirts: Next time you are selecting a new t-shirt be mindful of what thoughts you want to express.

With hurt feelings leading to lawsuits and lawsuits leading to hurt feelings, it is my turn to ask “Why say it out loud, when you could say it with your shirt?”
