i-D, 3 Cover Judgment Day

Picture via i-D online

i-D has unveiled their Then, Now and Next cover special to celebrate their 30th birthday issue. The 3 cover special features none other than Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Naomi Campbell, respectively. But this raises the obvious question pricking everyone’s brain, WHAT COVER IS THE BEST?

In judging the three cover girls we first have to consider their careers and their contribution to what i-D Editor in Chief Terry Jones describes as a “celebration of identity”. Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell are both successful models, two careers with a fair share of temper tantrums, fashions ads, drug rumors, court sentences and Campbell’s most recent “blood diamond” controversy. Campbell has undoubtedly shattered color barriers in the modeling industry, but shows very little support for other models of color. Kate Moss is a working mother and successful designer, but her influence is limited to fashion insiders.  Lady Gaga is a recording/performing artist who has also played muse and spokeswoman to various brands and designers, most recently with her involvement in MAC Cosmetic’s Viva Glam campaign benefiting the company AIDS Fund.

Furthermore, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss are adored by the fashion crowd and have definitely contributed to the supermodel attitude, but are frowned upon for their diva antics by outsiders.  Lady Gaga, with ranging opinions about her wardrobe and fashion contributions, has taken an open stance to support the rights of a historically undermined identity, the Gay community. Lady Gaga continues to break boundaries in her public and private life in the limelight of her tremendous success.

While it appears that ALL 3 women are beyond qualified to fill the spot, it is without question that Lady Gaga provides today’s best possible cover for a magazine like i-D.

For more evidence consider this:

THEN-Both Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell are iconic model figures from the THEN 90’s and early 2000’s
NOW-Lady Gaga is one of NOW’s supreme American entertainer
NEXT-Lady Gaga has positioned herself to be the voice for the NEXT generation of ever changing identities
