The Next Emperor of Couture

Oscar de La Renta has proclaimed the death of couture, but in Riccardo Tisci’s latest Couture collection death never looked so beautiful. Tisci, the Italian phenomenon who succeeded Julien McDonald, has spun his own web of Givenchy garments that tend to contain the perfect balance of contradictions. His showrooms become displays where religion and sensuality lay harmoniously somewhere between life and death, an ambivalence that transcends any contemporary perception of haute couture.

Since 2005 Tisci has evolved into an Artistic Director who is consistently leading the fashion world in terms of trends, silhouettes, techniques and theatricality. But who is Riccardo Tisci? If his clothes could speak what would they whisper about his most inner desires, or scream about his passions outside the confined world of fashion. The mystery behind the man with the golden studs may never be answered, but a clip of history may provide a glimpse.

Riccardo Tisci was born in the city of Taranto in 1974, located in Southern Italy. Taranto is a large commercial port as well as an important Italian naval base and it is often referenced as a being mythically tied to mermaids, inspirations often seen in Tisci’s work. After high school, at age 17, Riccardo Tisci moved to London to study fashion at the prominent Central Saint Martins. After graduating in 1999 Tisci worked for recognized brands Puma and Antonio Berardi.  In late February of 2005, on the verge of releasing his own collection, Tisci was appointed creative director of Givenchy by the fashion conglomerate LVMH, parent company to Givenchy brand. Since then Riccardo Tisci has released exuberant collections ranging from graphic kaffeyah ensembles, face ornamentations to intricate ruffling layered tops and lace appliqué covered gowns. Tisci is planting his seeds deep into the Givenchy house and the fashion world at large, in 2008 he was appointed responsibilities over the Givenchy menswear collections and continues making strides to change the often one sided perception of beauty, fashion, haute couture and the grey areas in between.

With his ever growing following of celebrity and royal clientele, there is no limitation to what Riccardo Tisci could accomplish. For now I will say that Riccardo Tisci is crafting his own interpretation of how and why people dress, a task that is consequently proving profitable for Givenchy. NOW it is MY turn to ask “With the claims of a dying world of couture and the constant commercial demands and limitations of fashion houses like Givenchy, when is Riccardo going to branch out with is own label?” Soon lets hope!
